Stadium Director at Thomand Park, John Cantwell, has suggested that a GAA event at the venue in the near future would certainly not be out of the question.

The redeveloped Limerick stadium opened in November last year and has since successfully hosted both rugby and soccer internationals. The home venue for Munster rugby has a 27,000 capacity and would easily be converted for use as a venue for GAA matches.

“I’d love to see Gaelic Games played here,” Cantwell told Hogan Stand magazine.

With a redeveloped and floodlit Gaelic Grounds also situated in Limerick, the demand for another stadium in the city seems limited but Cantwell believes that the atmosphere generated by Thomand Park can bring a game to life even with a smaller crowd.

“Of course we will be hoping to have more soccer friendlies and other events at Thomond Park with the atmosphere we can generate here with 27,000 supporters,” said Cantwell.

“It has been said before that it’s very hard to create an atmosphere in an 80,000 stadium and I think that’s true. We would love to host more events here, so long as it does not conflict with fixtures already scheduled in advance.”
